Recollecting Rwanda

Africa, the inescapable.

BITE, KIGALI! (That’s bee-teh, as in “hello”) I made it, after four insane days. I’m sitting in the living room of our beautiful house right now with Julia and Nelson, two recent Occidental alums who have been teaching filmmaking here for about a month.
Today is election day in Rwanda, by the way. This will be the second election since the 1994 genocide, and Paul Kagame is expected to be re-elected by an overwhelming majority vote. It’s interesting to see how calm everyone is here, when the news BBC and CNN broadcasts I was watching last night in Nairobi made it seem like rioting and violence were on the horizon.
I can’t wait to go shopping at the bazaar and cook my first meal here. I’ll probably get distracted along the way—the colors are overwhelming, my camera lens is going to get really used up. Everyone smiles, no worries. Everything is beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
In this moment, I feel incredibly alive.

P.S. Our internet connection is very slow, so I won’t be able to upload as many photos—this one will have to suffice for now.
