Oh, comely
Recollecting Rwanda
Africa, the inescapable.
2011.
[Teaching Photography in Kigali, Rwanda.
August 2010.]
In His Shoes ministries of Glendale, led by Fr. Vazken Movsesian, invited me to speak about my work in Rwanda at their 8th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. retreat at Rancho La Scherpa in Goleta (part of Santa Barbara county). Great engagement from the retreat participants, great questions, great feedback. Thanks for having me, IHS!
Just published “Recollecting Rwanda: A Lesson in Forgiveness and Respect” (click link to read article) in the Winter Issue of Haytoug —the official publication of the Armenian Youth Federation Western United States.
Kudos to the folks at Haytoug for a beautiful issue, excellent layout design, and a powerful back cover. Learn more about the campaign to end domestic violence in Armenia here.

This song reminds me of the sleepy heat at high noon in Kigali. Kanun and kamancha to soothe the soul.
Anyone who thinks the pop-garbage that people bump in their cars and at weddings deserves to be called “Armenian music” needs to hush and listen to this song.
Rwanda in 35mm
Just uploaded scans of my 35mm photos from Rwanda. Still need to be organized, though. Click on the red link above to see them.

Made it, without a hitch. Something peppermint spilled on my suitcase, but everything is otherwise peachy. Haven’t missed L.A. this much in years.
I’ve been inside the London Heathrow airport so many times, but never stepped foot into London itself. Perhaps it’s time to develop an interest in western Europe.
Last Day in Kigali
9:30 am, flight leaves at 6:30 pm to Nairobi. Then off to London and—eventually—L.A.
Waiting for my students to arrive at the house right now, they said they wanted to say goodbye one last time. Going to go out afterwards and shoot the traditional roll of B&W. Incredibly grateful for this experience—stay tuned for a photo gallery of my students’ work.
Recollecting Rwanda: August 28, 2010. Kigali, Rwanda. Photography exhibition at Ywam center. All work produced by 16 Rwandan men and women.
Second to last class. Getting ready for Saturday’s exhibition at the Wywam center. So proud of my students and incredibly excited to show their work to the community.
